Best countries for tech professionals in 2026

For a software developer, data specialist or IT engineer, the question is rarely "can I find a job abroad?". It is "which country will let me in on the salary I can realistically get, and will I be able to work in English?".

This ranking looks at six countries with a well defined skilled work route and compares three things: the official salary requirement in 2026, how widely English is spoken, and the speed of fixed broadband.

The comparison

The EF English Proficiency Index only covers countries where English is not the main language, so it does not rank the four English speaking countries. For reference, the global median fixed broadband download in the Ookla index for August 2026 was 130 Mbps.

Country by country

Netherlands

The Dutch highly skilled migrant route is built around a published salary threshold. For 2026 it is €5,942 a month gross from age 30 and €4,357 under 30, excluding holiday allowance. Recent graduates who qualify for the orientation year have a reduced threshold of €3,122. The Netherlands also has the highest score in the EF English index, first of 123 countries.

Germany

The EU Blue Card requires €50,700 a year in 2026. A lower threshold of €45,934.20 applies to IT specialists, shortage occupations and recent graduates. According to the German missions abroad, IT specialists with at least three years of comparable professional experience can qualify even without a university degree.

There is a nuance worth knowing. In its 2025 shortage analysis, Germany's Federal Employment Agency no longer found a shortage in software development, which had been on the list the year before. The route is still open. What changes is the job market: expect more competition for developer roles than a few years ago. Germany is also the slowest country in this table for fixed broadband.

Ireland

The Critical Skills Employment Permit is aimed at occupations on the Critical Skills Occupations List, which the Irish government describes as including roles in ICT, medicine, sciences, finance and business. The minimum is €40,904 a year with a relevant degree, €36,848 if the qualification was obtained in the previous 12 months, or €68,911 for most other occupations. Permit holders can apply for immediate family reunification, and a spouse or partner living in Ireland can apply for a permit to work, currently issued free of charge.

United Kingdom

The Skilled Worker visa requires £41,700 a year or the going rate for the specific occupation, whichever is higher. For senior people in digital technology there is a second option, the Global Talent visa, which does not require a job offer and allows stays of up to five years at a time, but does require an endorsement unless you hold an eligible prize.

Canada

Canada does not set a salary threshold. Express Entry ranks the candidates in its pool and invites the top ranked to apply for permanent residence. On top of general rounds, Canada runs category based rounds for occupations it wants to prioritise.

Here is the change for 2026: the official list of STEM occupations for category based selection has 11 entries, and the only IT role on it is cybersecurity specialists. Software engineers, developers and data scientists are not on the list. They can still be invited, but through general rounds, competing with the rest of the pool.

Australia

Under the Skills in Demand visa, the Core Skills stream requires AUD 79,423 a year for nominations lodged between 1 July 2026 and 30 June 2027, and the salary must also match the market rate for the role. The Specialist Skills stream starts at AUD 146,576. Unlike Canada's STEM category, Australia's Core Skills Occupation List includes a wide range of IT roles, among them software engineer, developer programmer, DevOps engineer and several cybersecurity occupations.

How to read this ranking

• The threshold is a floor, not a target. A visa salary requirement tells you the minimum. Employers still pay the market rate, and in some countries the rules require it.
• Language decides daily life. You can work in English in all six countries. Outside work, the Netherlands and Germany rank very high on English proficiency, but paperwork, housing and school still happen in the local language.
• Thresholds change every year. Germany's and the Netherlands' figures are updated for each calendar year, and Australia's every July. Check the official page before you apply.
