Digital nomad visas in 2026: who offers one and how much income you need

A digital nomad visa lets you live in a country while working remotely for an employer or clients based elsewhere. The rules look similar from a distance and differ a lot up close: how much you must earn, for how long, whether your family can come and what kind of status you actually get.

This article covers seven countries among the 50 on Gledori. Each one is included because we could confirm its current rules on an official government page in September 2026. Other countries run remote work schemes too, but we left out any whose current figures we could not confirm at the source.

The comparison

The 2026 amounts for Portugal, Spain and Colombia are our calculation from the official rule and the official minimum wage for 2026. Portugal's minimum wage is EUR 920 a month. Spain's is EUR 17,094 a year, and the figure above uses that annual amount spread over 12 months. Colombia's is COP 1,750,905 a month.

When the threshold moves every year

In four of the seven countries the income requirement is not a fixed number. It is tied to a national wage figure that changes every year:

• Portugal, Spain and Colombia use the national minimum wage.
• Croatia uses the average net salary of the previous year, published by its statistics bureau.

If you plan to apply early in a new year, check whether the new minimum wage is already in force. Colombia is a good example of why: in February 2026 the Council of State provisionally suspended the decree that set the 2026 minimum wage, and the government issued a temporary decree with the same amount. In July 2026 the court revoked that suspension, so the original decree is in force again while the case on its legality continues. The amount did not change.

Estonia, Hungary and Brazil set their requirements in fixed amounts, which only change when the rule itself changes.

Country notes

Portugal. The remote work residence visa requires proof of average monthly income over the last three months of at least four times the guaranteed minimum wage, plus proof of tax residence. The income must come from an employment contract, a company agreement or a service contract.

Spain. The international telework visa can be requested at a consulate, valid for up to one year, or, if you apply from within Spain, as a residence authorisation granted directly for three years. Family members can apply with you.

Croatia. The temporary stay is granted for up to 18 months. If you were granted less, you can extend, but the extension is at most six months. After it ends, a new digital nomad application can only be made six months later. You must register your address with the police within 30 days.

Estonia. The digital nomad visa is a long stay visa of up to 365 days. You must show that your income met the threshold during the six months before you apply. The state fee is EUR 120.

Hungary. The White Card is a residence permit valid for up to one year and renewable once. It is designed for one person: family members of a White Card holder cannot get a residence permit for family reunification.

Colombia. The visa is only available to citizens of countries whose passports are exempt from short stay visas for Colombia. It allows stays of up to two years and does not allow paid work for Colombian companies.

Brazil. The visa and residence authorisation last up to one year and can be renewed once. You can apply at a consulate, or from inside Brazil to the Ministry of Justice.

Before you apply

• Tax is a separate question. A nomad visa settles your right to stay. It does not settle where you pay tax, which depends on each country's residence rules and any tax treaty.
• Health insurance is often required. Brazil and Croatia, for example, ask for health insurance valid in their territory.
• Rules change. Check the official page again right before applying.
